Title:
Women's schooling and religious affiliation in Malawi at the end of the
twentieth century

Authors:
Doctor, HV

Source:
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, 25 (5): 481-492; SEP 2005

Abstract:
This paper examines the association between religious affiliation and women's
schooling in Malawi. Using data from the nationally representative 2000
Demographic and Health Survey, results show that there are substantial
differences in the acquisition of schooling by religious affiliation. More
nonreligious and Muslim women reported that they had never been to school
compared with women from Church of Central African Presbyterian and Catholic
denominations. Further, our findings suggest that a woman's schooling is
strongly influenced by her urban childhood residence and an increase in age at
first marriage. These findings are related to the association of Christian
groups with Western societies and religions that emphasize evangelization and
recourse to schooling. Recommendations for further direction in research are
discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Title:
Tensions and dilemmas of cross-cultural transfer of knowledge:
post-structural/postcolonial reflections on an innovative teacher education in
Pakistan

Authors:
Kanu, Y

Source:
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, 25 (5): 493-513; SEP 2005

Abstract:
Globalization in higher education and the replacement of state funding of
universities with "revenue substitution" strategies in western countries have
resulted in an increasing number of universities in these countries
participating in what has come to be known as transnational knowledge transfer
without being better informed about the cultural contexts in which this
knowledge is applied, resulting in many program failures and resistance in the
recipient countries. One reason for this neglect is the difficulty involved in
identifying which aspects of culture to select for study before implementing
educational innovations in a recipient country. The study reported in this paper
was undertaken as a curriculum inquiry to identify those aspects of culture,
which affect, influence or mediate curriculum, pedagogy and teacher learning in
South Asia, where an increasing number of western expatriates are engaged in
international curriculum work. Three aspects of culture-namely, conc!
epts of self, discursive practices and indigenous approaches to learning-which
emerged as having significant influence on curriculum and teacher learning, and
may help expatriate educator's to provide educational experiences that are
grounded in the cultural realities of South Asia are discussed. The paper draws
briefly on post-structural, postcolonial theories, and enunciations of critical
pedagogy to reflect on culture, education and resistance in international
academic relations. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Title:
The search for quality: A five country study of national strategies to improve
educational quality in Central Asia

Authors:
Chapman, DW; Weidman, J; Cohen, M; Mercer, M

Source:
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, 25 (5): 514-530; SEP 2005

Abstract:
This paper presents a comparative analysis of the strategies employed over the
last decade by governments of five Central Asia republics-Azerbaijan,
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan-to raise educational
quality at the primary and secondary levels. Data are drawn from a 2002
cross-national study sponsored by the Asian Development Bank that examined
recent education reform efforts across these countries. Using a globalization
perspective, a comparison of countries on 14 strategies that were most commonly
used by these countries suggested that efforts to raise education quality met
with mixed results. While raising the quality of education was a popular cause
and a safe political goal, it proved to be an elusive target. (c) 2005 Elsevier

Title:
'Sir, on what page is the answer?' Exploring teacher decision-making during
complex curriculum change, with specific reference to the use of learner support
material

Authors:
Stoffels, NT

Source:
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, 25 (5): 531-546; SEP 2005

Abstract:
This paper presents preliminary research evidence on the classroom practices of
two South African science teachers currently implementing the new outcomes-based
curriculum. A comparative case study approach was followed, during which
evidence was collected through non-participant classroom observation, pre- and
post-lesson interviews and video-stimulated recall sessions. This provided
insight into the pre-, inter- and post-active decision-making processes that
shaped their classroom practices. The evidence suggests that the teachers'
almost pedantic use of the commercially prepared 'outcomes-based' texts is
driven by a number of factors which present a significant threat of
intensification. I argue that the observed regularity with which teachers prefer
not to exercise their decision-making autonomy, speaks of self-regulating,
defensive teaching-a strategy to cope with this threat of intensification. (c)

Title:
Influence of home-related factors in numeracy performance of fourth-grade
children in Mauritius

Authors:
Sukon, KS; Jawahir, R

Source:
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, 25 (5): 547-556; SEP 2005

Abstract:
The research reported in this paper is based on a survey carried out jointly by
UNESCO and UNICEF with the collaboration of the Government of Mauritius. This
survey involves 1800 fourth-grade pupils who were taken from 60 primary schools.
The main purpose of this paper is to explore the home-related factors, which
influence Numeracy performance at primary level in Mauritius. It is found that
the level of education of parents, availability of reading materials at home,
home possession, parental support in education at home and familiarity with
English at home are the major factors causing variation in the children's
Numeracy achievement. (c) 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Title:
Private schooling in the Northern Areas of Pakistan: A decade of rapid expansion

Authors:
Harlech-Jones, B; Baig, M; Sajid, S; Ur-Rahman, S

Source:
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, 25 (5): 557-568; SEP 2005

Abstract:
This article investigates the rapid expansion of private schooling in the
Northern Areas of Pakistan during the period 1993-2003. Our observations are
mainly based on a survey of about 40% of the total number of private schools in
the Northern Areas in which we attested trends that are characteristic of many
private schools elsewhere, both nationally and internationally. For instance,
most of the parents are by no means wealthy, most think that private schools
provide better quality than government schools, English-medium instruction is a
key requirement, and all have pragmatic expectations of the benefits for their
children both from private schooling and from English-medium education. (c) 2005

Title:
Village education committees in West Bengal, India: Planned vision and beyond

Authors:
Wankhede, GG; Sengupta, A

Source:
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, 25 (5): 569-579; SEP 2005

Abstract:
This paper deals with decentralization of educational administration in West
Bengal, India. It gives specific emphasis on studying education committees
formed with the community members at village level for looking after the
management of primary schools in the concerned localities. For the purpose of
this study primary data have been collected from four village education
committees. The data provides information on the formation, structure and
functioning of village education committees. The findings contradict the
ideology on the basis of which these committees are formed. The paper ends with
an attempt to explore certain future paths of action. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All
